How to Troubleshoot Internet Explorer Errors

Category : Tools and Resources

Since Windows XP or Vista is still one of the most common operating systems on computers around the world, it also make sense that Internet Explorer is the most commonly used internet browser in use.

Different versions of Internet Explorer have gone through a lot of changes in recent years but IE7 is really the first version where a major change in the user interface has taken place, but all new versions of IE have had new functionality and bug fixing.

Although bug fixing is a good thing, software will never be perfect. Especially since new features are introduced, new errors will also be introduced. In addition to this, today’s browsing experience requires many additions to the standard browser.

We need a Flash player, QuickTime, toolbars and many more extras. Combine this with the various programming technologies available for the internet and IE (ActiveX, VBScript, JavaScript, Ajax), and we have plenty of possible causes for errors when they happen.

Here’s the Best Way to Deal with Internet Explorer Errors

The best way to solve IE problems is to use an organized approach. Step by step possible causes need to be excluded and corrective actions taken.

What follows is a list of steps to take when trying to fix Internet Explorer errors. The list is in no way complete, but covers most common causes and solutions.
Unfortunately it is difficult to provide the steps in a fixed order, since error causes can vary so much.

* Check and confirm that your problem is not related to a single website only. If that is the case, chances are the website has a programming error or is using some unsupported format.

* Make sure your Windows installation is updated. Microsoft releases regular updates and hotfixes, which include patches for the Internet Explorer application. So install the latest service pack and let Windows auto-install updates, or check for updates manually on a regular basis.

Even if you run an older version of IE, there are updates. IE6 for example has a service pack that fixes a number of issues. Install the latest version of IE if the issue can not be solved in a previous version.

* Try restarting Internet Explorer first. Visits to previous websites can mess up the Internet Explorer’s runtime environment. Close all IE instances before restarting a new instance.

* Start Internet Explorer without add-ons. In IE7 you can do this by clicking the Start menu, select All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Internet Explorer (No Add-ons).

You can also manually disable add-ons. (Older versions of Internet Explorer have similar ways to disable add-ons.)

The problem with add-ons is that they can interfere with each other and cause problems. In other cases, an add-on simply contains errors that causes IE to crash.

If you can get an updated version of the add-on, try that, otherwise keep it disabled. Simply disable all add-ons, restart IE and then turn the add-ons on one-by-one to find the problematic add-on.

* Make a backup by exporting your cookies and favorites (IE File menu, Import and Export), and then clear all temporary data.

In IE7, select the Tools menu and then click Internet Options. Now click the Delete button in Browsing history.

A new window will show all delete options. Delete files and Delete cookies can be tried to resolve errors, the others generally do not help to solve errors.

* IE7 also has an option to reset itself. Click the Tools menu and select Internet Options. Now select the Advanced tab. Next, click the Reset button.

This will include some of the other steps and will clear data and settings, and disable add-ons, so do not use this as the very first step.

* Use the Windows system file checker to check and repair file system errors. Click Start and in the Run option type “sfc /scannow”, and then press Enter. Follow the instructions in the program and reboot your PC when the scan is complete.

* Run Internet Explorer as the only application. In some cases interference with other programs is the problem. Boot your PC, close and startup programs you do not need and the open IE and test the website.

* Remove all ActiveX controls from your Internet Explorer installation. Third party ActiveX controls can have a high degree of integration with your browser, and as a result they can crash Internet Explorer.

Again, reinstall the ActiveX controls one-by-one if you need them and see which one is causing the problems.

* Make sure script debugging is disabled. In IE, click the Tools menu and then select Internet Options. Now select the Advanced tab and scroll down to the Browsing group.

Now select the Disable script debugging (Internet Explorer) and Disable script debugging (Other) checkboxes.

Good luck!

Ebook – A New Way Of Learning

Category : E-Books

The history of ebook dates back to 1970s, when Michael Hart realized that the greater advantage of the computer would be storage, recovery and exploring the materials already stored in our libraries. The digital form of the `Declaration of Independence` was presented as the first ebook.

Later, that small beginning turned into a huge project named as Project Gutenberg. Presently, Project Gutenberg stands with an access to 20,000 free textbooks and more than 100,000 books are offered by their partners. Every month the count for downloaded books stands above 3,000,000. These ebooks are available on the Net, can be stored in a hard drive of the computer or storage disks, easy to share and start blooming rapidly.

The earlier sets of ebooks were meant for small groups, as they were related to technical subjects like cutting edge hardware, manufacturing techniques, etc. After some time, they were available in a variety of formats and some of them were developed by leading software companies like Adobe`s PDF format. Ebooks embarked on their first success as romantic novels.

With the increasing popularity, new selling models of ebooks were developed, formats were regulated, special reading hardware was developed and many other measures were taken to make them available easily to the general public. Now you can read them on your laptops, handheld computers and on cell phones, anywhere and anytime. Leading companies have launched modern ebook reading devices also.

There are number of advantages associated with the reading of ebooks. It is easy to search the text and it can be cross-referenced with the use of hyperlinks. It does not require much space to store them, as a huge number of ebooks can be stored in a single device like one CD can store 500 ebooks. Since ebooks require little storage space, they can be accessed any time and there is no issue of `out of print` date. Authors can also earn royalties for an indefinite period.

It is a boon for the readers who are not able to read the printed texts, as they can adjust the size of the text and font. With the help of text-to-speech software, ebooks can be converted to audio books. Beside this, back-lit devices make reading of them in weak light or in complete darkness possible.

In addition to that, it is quite comfortable to read ebooks, as there is no need to grasp it like an open paperback. It can be put to one side and read with free-hands. The reproduction of ebook costs very little and required number of copies can be made instantaneously. Backups can be retained easily and it is not easy to eliminate the distributed work. Since the distribution of them is easy, it promotes the sales numbers of the printed copies.

Transferring of an e-book is an easy and quick operation. Once the download is complete, you can read it immediately or at your ease. Though the reading of them require electricity, but it does not require any other resources like paper, ink, etc. as in case of printed books. Moreover, it is cheaper than the printed books and some of them are just absolutely free. Above all, they can be updated easily.

Since every coin has two faces, even ebooks are not left apart from the disadvantages. Some of the them can be read with particular software or require special devices to display it. The existing format of ebooks may not be compatible with forthcoming devices. E-book reader devices are fragile and the risk of being damaged, stolen or lost is associated with it. Once the device is lost or stolen, the stored e-books also go away with it. Some of the them are copy restricted and can not be transferred to other person. Moreover, there are some issues with the digital rights management which becomes very difficult for a layman to comprehend.

Conclusively, the benefits of ebooks rule over the disadvantages associated with it. Nothing can stop them for spreading its domain.

What Is Google PageRank (PR) And How Can I Increase Pagerank?

Category : Free Stuff

In order for Google to determine where your website should rank when a search result in your site coming up in the search engine, they needed to find a common factor that differentiate between websites.

One such factor they found was that certain sites is more important than others. Now all they need was a way to describe the level of authority of any website. Google developed a rating system called the Google Pagerank which scores a website from a zero to a ten – a ten being the most important site.

Some internet marketers found that PageRank is not that important. The fact is that you get a disclosed ranking that you can view using online tools and the Google toolbar. Yet Google has a ranking for your site that can vary from day to day depending on the way they calculate the importance of your website.

Google calculates the pagerank of a website using a mathematical formula. They are very secretive about the way they calculate which site is better than others because people are trying very hard to get their websites to rank high in the search engines.

Whenever Google would change the way they calculate the authority of a website, the search results are shifted. People that have enjoyed hundreds and thousands of free traffic from having a number one place in the search results for a keyword that is searched very often may find that suddenly they get nearly no more traffic. Suddenly their income may go done from thousands of dollars a day to hundreds of dollars or less.

No one really needs to know what the formula is that Google uses for calculating page rank. Since the obvious is mostly correct I can tell you some of what is important for your website to rank high in the search engines.

Natural backlinks are linking from websites with a high page rank and also from websites that has no importance to the websites. Remember that when you submit articles to article submission sites. Do not discard the sites with a zero pagerank, as they have a very important balancing effect.

The more the types of sites that the backlinks come from relate to a situation of normal backlink building from people that link to a site as a quality resource on a specific topic, the better.

Different websites are hosted on different website servers around the world, each using a block IP addresses from the pool available all over the world. If all the links comes from a too tightly focused grouping of these blocks then it may trigger the search engines to believe that the links are made intentionally to gain page rank.

Search engines love lots of pages of content that is growing natural. Adding a thousand web pages a day may flag the growth factor as unnatural. Adding ten pages or less every day could be considered as natural.

A normal keyword density will show the search engines that there are related words in your content but not so much that your content is mostly keywords. When you write about a topic, try to widen your focus. Instead of just focusing on the keyword, try to focus on maybe 3 or 7 ideas that are about the keyword.

Quality content brings a natural flood of traffic. Since traffic towards any website is a known factor, Google may also determine your PageRank depending on the amount of traffic your website get on average.

Online Bidding: How Low Can You Go?

Category : Online Auctions

It’s time to change your online bidding strategy. Forget about placing automatic bids with the highest price you are willing to pay for an item. Instead decide how little you are willing to pay. Confused yet? Don’t be. This is the wave of the future in online bidding. Rather than trying to outbid one another while auction sellers pray for bidders to meet their reserve, reverse auction bidders try to place the lowest unique bid. The lowest unique bid wins which means that if you are the only person to bid L.01(British Pounds)you would win the item.

So how low can you go? The lowest unique bid wins and bids must fall between the bid ranges that have been set for that item. Not to worry, though. A bid range is nothing like a reserve. It serves as a way to even the playing field more than anything else and is designed to keep bids from getting too high. Most of the time the bid range starts at L.01 so that should prove the point. Of course you might strategize that everyone would think of bidding L.01, so maybe you would come in at L.09 and see if that wins you a new laptop computer or other similarly discounted products.

This new kind of online bidding is addictive and fun. You will not only have loads of fun trying to outsmart other bidders to win your item for a mere few pence, you will have bragging rights for life as you recall the story of the amazing vacation you took for just L5. Your friends will be green with envy and will likely soon be bidding against you on the next item.

You might wonder how to bid in a reverse auction. The first objective is to decide what item you would like to bid on. Next you can place your bid by texting the code for the item and the amount you want to bid. Soon you will know if you placed the lowest unique bid and won the item. In some cases you can snail mail your bid in (but that is awfully slow and not nearly as much fun). And in some cases you can register to play online by paying a small fee.

Online bidding is great fun and can be quite rewarding when you walk away with discounted products that you might not otherwise be able to afford. Think of it as an online limbo: How low can you go?

Maximizing Your Buying Power on eBay

Category : E-Commerce

Since it’s conception, eBay has long been the happy hunting grounds for shoppers, collectors, antique dealers and antique buyers throughout the world for rare and unique items to buy and sell on eBay.

It has become the preferred method of shopping for many people as it affords the luxury of shopping or selling at the convenience of your own home and at the best price; not to mention finding hard or rare items that would otherwise be impossible to find anywhere else.

EBay prides itself on being a user-friendly environment with loads of options and features to make your eBaying experience a positive one. They have a large user support system in place and their help videos can make understanding the process much easier and quicker to understand.

One of the first things you will do when searching for an item to buy on eBay is to enter the item into their search engine. Results will vary depending on how you describe the item. I have never not found anything on eBay; it is truly a universal store.

You can save your favorite searches and will be emailed any new items that come up for sale on eBay within your search frame. This will help you keep on top of what items are currently up for sale and one of the first to know when a new item is posted.

If you find something you like you can enter your highest bid and then wait for the auction to end. Or not. I’ve learned the hard way so I’ll let you know what I do so you don’t “loose” your item on eBay.

Instead of placing a bid, mark it as “Items I’m watching on eBay”, that way you will receive a reminder before the auction ends. On the last day of the auction, login and a few hours (no more than 2) place your highest bid.

Someone can always come in with a higher bid within the last two hours, and that often happens, however, I have successfully purchased eBay items this way, at the price that I wanted, than any other way.

If you bid too soon, you run the risk of raising the price too high too soon and “attracting” too much attention to the item. Shoppers are the same everywhere around the world, if an item comes up and someone is trying to buy it so soon, then they must want it as well!

Before you place any bid, ensure that they ship to your location. Some sellers refuse to ship anywhere outside of the United States, which is just silly. I’ve sold items on eBay and was glad to ship it anywhere around the world. It’s just plain laziness on the part of the seller if you ask me.

If they don’t indicate, you can always email and ask for exact shipping costs. Sellers are usually very good about responding quickly when they have a current listing.

The most efficient way of paying on eBay is through PayPal. I find PayPal to be more beneficial for the buyer than the vendor, but that’s just my opinion, I’m glad to use them just the same.

If a vendor does not accept PayPal as an accepted form of payment, then you will have to send them a check or a money order and when you have to exchange funds for the proper currency, a trip to the bank is mandatory and makes the whole experience more troublesome.

With any luck they do accept PayPal and the whole transaction can be completed within one minute of receiving an invoice from the seller requesting payment. It’s that simple and your package should arrive on average within 10 days.

So that’s it, hope you found these tips useful and happy hunting on eBay!

Prevent Conventional And Online Plagiarism By Citing Sources

Category : Tools and Resources

Many writers and students use a source or reference for a piece of writing they are working on and keep the main idea of the original, thinking they are safe. In fact, this is one of the most common forms of online plagiarism. Maintaining the form of the original source is against copyright law even if the exact wording itself has been altered.

Unfortunately, this violation is also difficult to catch without an expert plagiarism service and knowledge. It is usually left until it is too late resulting in academic violations or even jail time along with heavy fines. If you do choose to follow this type of format, protect yourself by giving credit to the original author.

Situations That Require Citation

Any time you use someone’s writing as a direct source for your own work, you need to provide the original author with credit through citation. Paraphrasing the general idea of a work or taking direct quotes both require credit. Incorporating a unique concept, thought, or idea into your writing also qualifies as traditional and online plagiarism.

Using a commonly known fact is not considered a violation by a plagiarism service or expert. This is information that is understood by a majority even if it is only in a particular industry or field. Some examples of this could include the boiling point of an element or a favorite story such as ‘The Boy Who Cried Wolf.’

How To Give Credit

While the exact way to cite a source depends on the style you are writing in, the requirements of the requestor, and the format of the source itself, all of these generally contain similar information. The author’s name and title of the item used almost always come first. The publishing information is also required. This might include the publisher’s name or the name of the website, the date the item became live or was published, and the exact location of the portions used in your work.

To prevent online plagiarism, you may also need to provide the DOI for the piece. The International DOI Foundation assigns and manages the Digital Object Identifier as a way of tracking and identifying electronic works. The sources might be used directly in your piece by stating ‘According to…’ if it is a small portion and found online provided it links back to the source. Credit can also be given through an endnote system or a formal bibliography.

Benefits Of Source Citing

Using a plagiarism service and the steps taken to prevent copyright violation may seem like a nuisance at first, but the benefits make it a worthwhile investment. The most obvious is preventing the pitfalls of the violation. Showing your research can add a significant amount of importance to your piece since it demonstrates the value of your work.

If the information you used was flawed, you will have the citation to back you up when defending the misinformation. Where citations come in particularly handy online is in the fact that your readers can follow back to the original source in order to find more information.

It is the writer’s responsibility to prevent traditional and online plagiarism. Many professionals use a plagiarism service and experts to help them along the way. Being diligent in preventing it in your writing, however, is a vital step in this process.

Online Calendars: What Are They?

Category : Tools and Resources

They are slowly catching on, but many people still haven’t quite gotten the hang of them. Online or web calendars have been around for a while, but it is only just now that their potential for enhancing our lives is being explored. They help their users keep abreast of meetings, events and other relevant happenings like anniversaries and birthdays. Best of all, online calendars enable sharing of this information with many persons if needed, while also offering the ability to keep some things private.

What are Online Calendars?

These are just like any ordinary print calendars or diaries except that they are accessed online. Online calendars need web-enabled devices to be accessed, and they can also be shared with others, which is another great feature. There are now lots of online calendars to choose from. Of course, the one you decide on will be guided by your needs.

Some great features of online calendars include:

o Multiple views: You can adjust how the calendar is displayed to suit your tastes. Therefore it can display daily, weekly or monthly events.

o Online calendars can be integrated with other e-mail or e-mail-related programs, such as Outlook, Gmail and Yahoo mail.

o Once you have a web-enabled device you can have and share online calendars. That means if you use a Blackberry or any other PDA you can take advantage of the features of web-based calendars.

As to be expected, some web calendars are more advanced than others depending on the technology used. Advanced online calendars allow for viewing of events and appointments. They also enable users to add attachments if needed. Others allow users to determine which events are private (can be viewed only by specified people) and which are public. Listing recurring events is also possible so that there is no need to keep entering monthly meetings. Once the calendar is set up to keep repeating a particular event, it will do so until the feature is disabled.

Why Should I Use an Online Calendar?

There are many benefits associated with using online calendars. In today’s fast-paced world, one major benefit is that they enable the sharing of calendars among associates. Online calendars are accessible anywhere as long as there is Internet available. With so many global offices, they bring everyone closer together. Online calendars are also great for posting company information and events so that everyone can see it. These handy widgets mean no more missed meetings, events and appointments.

Online calendars are not just useful for work or work-related activities and appointment planning. They are just as handy for families and friends so that you can know who is on vacation and when. They can be used to send invitations and reminders to people in your address book. Some online calendars allow recipients to respond to your invitations without having to open an account with the calendar host.

Best of all, there are lots of online calendars available and most of them are free. Some popular providers of full-service calendars are Google, Yahoo, iCalendar and vCalendar. Deciding on which one is best for your needs is easy. There are lots of reviews online that discuss the features of the more popular ones and outlining their pros and cons.

With an online calendar, you will never have to miss a date or appointment ever again. At least, you won’t as long as you can connect to the Internet. Finally, with time being a scarce commodity for most people, online calendars also offer great time management benefits.

Jay Gaulard writes for a wide selection of websites on various topics. He is a veteran of the internet and has come to be respected in his many areas of expertise. This article was written on behalf of Okashun, a popular event calendar website.

Junk Mail: If You Are Worried About Electronic Junk Mail

Category : Email

The most popular use of junk mail today is probably e-mail spam. People known as spammers send out large quantities of unwanted e-mails containing product information or sales copy to a large list of e-mail addresses. They do this in the hope of generating a lot of sales or leads whilst having little mailing costs.

Spam and spyware may discreetly be using your computer’s resources causing it to run slower than normal. You should scan your computer and remove any spyware you find. In extreme cases your computer can actually be used by spammers to help them to distribute their junk mail.

It is critical to have some sort of spam filter in place for ordering and screening your e-mails in your inbox. E-mail filtering software can do this for you automatically. A spam filter may remove suspicious junk mail so you do not have to do it yourself.

There are many anti-spam software available that may filter and prevent junk mail from reaching your inbox. This can better protect your computer against unwanted e-mails. You can look for software such as Comodo, SpamTitan, Mailwasher or SpamFighter.

There are many a free spam blocker that you may find by using search engines. Here are 3 free software options I found by just entering the keyphrase ‘free spam filter’ into the Google search engine and clicking on the search button.

#1. SPAMfighter is a free tool designed for use with the e-mail programs Microsoft Outlook and Outlook Express that automatically filters spam.

#2. Mailwasher is reliable and protects your computer from unwanted junk mail.

#3. Spambutcher claims to be an advanced spam filtering software that can stop junk mail almost 98% of the time.

So why is spam protection so important? It is vital in order to protect your inbox and computer from insolicited junk mail sent by spammers, spam gangs and spam services.

What does the the law say about this issue? Spam law states that a message is spam only if it is unsolicited as well as sent in bulk. It is not just an issue of content, but rather of consent. It is about the delivery method. Spamming is illegal and punishable by law.

There are also spam filtering services available. You will have to pay for most of them. SpamRejection offers a comprehensive service with a money-back guarantee. Cudamail is another service that offers proven e-mail scanning technology and e-mail free of viruses and junk mail.

A spam firewall normally combines open source virus solutions, spam solutions and many different defense layers. For example, the Barracuda Spam Firewall is a powerful spam solution that is easy to install and operate. It is a paid system.

Refrain from displaying your primary address on your website or anywhere else on the world wide web. Spammers may see it and add it to their list of harvested emails. You will then keep getting junk mail you did not subscribe to in the first place.

Electronic junk mail will continue to be a problem for you as long as you do not have a strategy or software in place for handling this common internet threat.

Nicolaas Theron shares more information on how to stop spam at http://how-to-stop-spam.com/.

Virtual Malls Available Online – Something For Everyone!

Category : Online Shopping

Recently I read a study done by an independent researcher that stated the percentage of online shoppers had risen well over 83% in the last few years. This makes tons of sense for all sorts of reasons, and I’ll be the first to admit it, I would rather shop online in my pajamas then have to go out into a crowded mall any day, especially in the winter time! One of the main reasons people would rather shop online rather than offline is the pure convenience of it all. No more standing in lines, no matter waiting to be helped, and no more crowded malls! Now you simply go to your favorite mall or store online, do a quick search for what your looking for, find what you want, place it in your cart, pay, and voila your done. Quick, easy, painless.

Back to the searching for a quick second. If you find a search box on the site you are on and you enter in something really non-specified you are going to get thousands of results. Instead, search for something a little more particular. For example, don’t search for toys. Instead, search for Tickle Me Elmo or Tom Clancy Rainbow Six 3. Or better yet if the site has search options such as categories, prices, ages, color, etc, you can use that as well. You can find literally anything and everything you could or would ever need on these sites or malls. Seriously! How about car audio? Kitchen accessories? Video game consoles? Coffee? Candy? Gourmet Food? Office supplies? Hygienic supplies? Candles? Books? Music? The list goes on and on! And it doesn’t just stop there, you can also find certain brands in these malls or stores such as Nike, EA Sports, Starbucks, Lysol, Sharp, Brother, HP, etc.

The second most popular reason people would rather shop online is prices. That’s right, did you know that you have a better chance of finding the same thing online as you would in a mall or offline store, for cheaper? It’s true! As if the prices online weren’t already good and well to begin with, some stores and malls also will offer discount coupons that you can use through the store or if your directed on their site to another merchandiser. These are great coupons ranging from half offs, to free shipping to buy one get one free.

People of all ages can shop online, but in a lot of cases nowadays you will find that a lot of the older non-computerized individuals are also shopping online. Of course my grandma hasn’t come to this point yet, but she has 10 sons and daughters to do errands for her. But a lot of older people have gotten into the technological era by buying all sorts of things online. They have also taken up the convenience of grocery shopping online as well. Yes it’s true we have actually gone from calling in an order to the local grocery store, to shopping online, canceling out to the phone altogether, and receiving our products right at our door step through our computer. Amazing isn’t it? Before you know it, we will be driving in flying cars, and we will be able to use smell-o-vision on our television sets!

All in all these malls and shopping stores online are the best choice whether you want to buy a few things at a time, want to save some major money, or if you want to shop online for someones birthday or Christmas present and just don’t feel like wandering through the crowds of people associated with shopping malls and stores. And really my last point to why you should shop online? Its fun! Check it out and see for yourself!

Find New Or Old Friends Online; Its Easy, Quick & Fun!

Category : Directories

The basis for sites like Myspace and facebook was originally made so that friends and family could easily keep in touch with each other. This is great if you already have a friend, but when if you are looking for a new friend, or what if you are looking for a long lost friend you once had? In these cases Myspace and facebook aren’t really your best bet, you would have to know either where they are living right now or you would have to search through 10,000 profiles to find them. Its pretty time consuming when you really think about it.

Of course you can refine your search down to sex, age, orientation but even then you still will have to search through a few thousand profiles to find the right person. Finding a new friend is a little easier because all you would need is age, sex, orientation, hobbies, etc. However, I don’t really like to use myspace as a way to find new friends, I just haven’t had good luck with it at all.

One thing I have had a lot of luck with is these websites called friend finders. These friends finders range from adult/mature, pen pals, online, offline, activity partners and much more. I have used a few of them to find activity partners for offline activities such as sports or just going out. You would be really surprised to see all the reasons people go on these sites, and all the different kinds of people you can find as well.

You have to figure there are 6.45 billion people on earth and there was about 729 million people in the year 2004 that had access to the Internet, so that’s a lot of people in one “place” all looking for different things and all interested in different things. You have a really good chance of finding your new best friend in all of this! And even if you don’t find a best friend, you could find some really interesting people along the way. Its sort of like visiting a new country every day. You won’t meet people from just the country you are in (unless you choose to do so).

You can use these for finding new friends, but you can also use other sites for finding old friends, its pretty simple too. All you have to do is enter in a first and last name (which myspace lets you do but it doesn’t work), and if you can figure out the age they would be now, that’s even better. Once you enter in those small attributes, you will be sent to a page with everyone that has that name and is that age. Chances are there will only be a few people or hey maybe you will get lucky and there will only be one! On a lot of these sites instead of friends name they will ask for something like high school you went to or group/organization you were a member of.

In this case, when you enter in first name and last name along with high school you are going to hit payload. Seriously if you actually find TWO different people with the same first and last name that went to the same school as you, it’s probably a mistake because that’s just about impossible.

I did a search once for myself just to see how it worked so I put in my first name, last name, and high school. I found one other person with my name but it was spelled differently, hers was Christie Amberose, so close yet so far away! It was kind of freaky seeing someone with a name so close to mine, but very different at the same time. Make sure you get the spelling right on the names when you are doing a search or you just might find someone you weren’t even looking for to begin with!

No More Spam And Junk Mail Please

Category : Email

You may imagine a world wide web where there is no more spam. That would be wonderful. However, the reality is that the spamming operations of a relatively small number of internet users result in the massive amounts of spam that are being sent on a daily basis. Sad, but true. It takes only one fly in your soup to make you complain to the waiter.

If you want to be free of spam, you should at least use some kind of spam filter for your computer. A spam blocker is a software application that scans and orders your incoming e-mail messages and attempts to filter out unwanted messages. A spam blocker is normally not 100% effective, but it takes a lot of the manual work in reading through and deleting unsolicited e-mails off your hands.

There are numerous free anti spam software that you may consider using. This can help you to clean up your inbox by removing junk mail easily. You may do a search engine search for the keyphrase ‘free anti spam’ and review each of the results until you find a free spam blocker software you like.

An example of a free spam blocker is POPfile. This is a good e-mail POP and NNTP proxy that filters out junk mail while ordering your normal mail.

It is important that you learn the basics concerning how to stop spam. Be sure to install and use a spam filter for all your e-mail addresses. This will help you get closer to no more spam in your inbox.

You probably already know that spam is unwanted, but is it illegal? A big problem with spam law is that the world wide web has grown so quickly. Spam law has been lagging behind and is still a bit confused about what is considered to be spam and what is not. Just remember that junk mail is illegal when unsolicited as well as sent in bulk.

Email spam wastes a lot of time and inbox space. This is true for individuals as well as big companies. Companies and individuals want to deal with junk mail safely and easily. This has created a big need for effective anti-spam software.

Stopping spam is proving to be difficult. If the anti spam law of one country makes it too difficult to work there, the spam gangs simply relocate to a different country with a weaker spam law.

You may need a spam filter if you desire to be free of spam mail. Spam blocker software blocks messages it decides is junk mail and keeps them from appearing in your inbox. It may accidentally block messages you wanted to read, but on the whole it is quite useful.

You can help the fight to eliminate spam by using a spam filter or complaining to your internet service provider about it. Also, never respond to any spam email you receive. Spammers are after all criminals engaging in unlawful behavior. This may help us towards a world wide web with no more spam.

Secret Surfing with Web Proxies

Category : Tools and Resources

Proxies are getting more and more popular, as companies and schools begin to block out more and more websites, these students and employees are now turning to the use of online web based proxies.

There are two main reasons that people use proxies. The first is for anonymous surfing and the second is to access sites that have been restricted by filter settings, which have been set by the company or school that you are attending. We will now take a look at these a bit more in depth.

We will firstly cover the anonymous browsing section, the IP address of any computer is recorded when you go onto a site. Your IP basically represents, or is as equivalent as your home address. People can automatically trace where you are located, with your specific IP.

Web based proxies eliminate this problem by using an anonymous IP, there fore you can surf on the internet as much as you like, without getting it tracked back to your home. There is nothing to install on your system, all you basically have to do is enter your URL into the address bar of the proxy.

The second use of proxies are used for accessing blocked sites at your work or education place. As the web 2.0 bubble grows a lot of people try to access sites such as Facebook or Myspace, this causes them to do less work and spend more time socialising. Although employees and schools can block out these sites, they can not stop all of the existing proxies. Therefore, a major source of traffic for these proxy sites are coming from these specific locations.

If you own a proxy yourself, you will notice that there is a drop in traffic over the weekends. This proves the theory, that most of the traffic is coming from work places or schools. While using a proxy you should always use the fastest possible connection, there are two types of scripts that are commonly used, one is PHP based and probably the fastest on the market, as it does not store cookies. The second is CGI based and runs a bit on the slow side.

Using a proxy can be great for various reasons as mentioned above, but they should not be used for performing illegal tasks such as hacking, as you will still get caught, as no body likes a hacker. So please behave with anonymous surfing as this is a well built system and should not be taken for granted.

When Did Email Start Changing Our Lives?

Category : Email

Email (also known as electronic mail) started its humble beginnings at Arpanet way, way back in 1969. That time, two universities, the UCLA Stanford and the University of Utah, created a two-computer network. Through this network, the two schools started an experiment that ended to sharing of data. From this point, the Interface Message Processor (or IMP) was developed.

In December 1971, the Interface Message Processor allowed for the connectivity standard of a network, which eventually evolved into 32 devices. Arpanet continued growing. Ray Tomlinson, who was working as an Arpanet contractor together with Bolt Beranek and Newman, formed the standard pattern for the email address: name_of_user@computer_name.

When Arpanet was discovered for its usefulness by the armed forces, the need to increase the capacity to manage data was accelerated.

In 1975, Larry Roberts developed a system that managed emails through use of folders. He used this method to sort the emails of his boss. This inspired John Vital to develop software that will help organize email consistently. This software evolved many times until it became user-friendly. Gradually, this new-born technology started to spread. After several years, 75 percent of the traffic through Arpanet consisted of electronic mail or email.

When the need and demand for a consumer-based electronic messaging system continued to increase at a fast pace, the traffic moved beyond Arpanet to a larger traffic network called the Internet. Since then, email enhanced the efficiency of communication between users from around the world.

However, the user’s ability to connect to local providers or other computers was entirely tied to the carrier of telephone charges; i.e., long distance call and international call fees.

The resulting exorbitant charges led to the development of personal computers, storage, and program applications, which allowed both offline and scheduled sending and receiving emails.

In the ’90s, Internet usage became more widespread. When Internet service providers opened up local modem hubs, the whole system took a huge leap forward. This allowed the users to enjoy communicating in almost real time.

Email has really come a long way. As the predominant method of communication today, email had affected and will always affect the lives of many people. Many industries are now relying heavily on the advantageous usefulness of email. Businesses use emails on their information campaign and marketing strategies. Consumers of goods and services place orders and send inquiries to companies through email.

Email has deeply integrated its technology into the society. It has proven its efficiency. But people should still be careful. Since users moved away from Usenets and other bulletin boards to a full electronic message system, the impairment found in the concept of the SMTP protocol became obvious. Because the recipients had no way to find out whether the senders were real or fake, many found themselves scammed through email.

Compare Rebates, Cash-Back, and Reward Sites to Find Best Deals

Category : Tools and Resources

Are you looking for the best bargains in the market? Something free, something given as gift? You can easily find all these and more on the Internet nowadays. It seems every website is offering free merchandise as an advertising tool to boost sales, especially on the computer and electronic items. The main target in the advertising world is the younger generations. Websites that sell these modern gadgets and devices with attractive terms, without outlaying a large sum of cash, are called incentive-ized websites.

An item or service or a set of products can be taken by a consumer for free. Some of these incentive-driven websites even offer cash, in exchange to a number of referrals. For example, a site owner will pay $20 per referral and the item on offer is worth $300. The number of persons referred should be 15. These 15 referred persons should be willing to try a new service or a new product. So a consumer who can convince many friends to sign-up to the said website will get a lot of freebies.

Many people find these free trials of services and products hard to believe. They suspect that these offers are not really free, and they may be right. The wisest thing to do is to choose and try those services or products that you’d probably purchase later anyway. So why not try them for free before buying? Some have very low charges on services, such as a year-long subscription of web-hosting.

For one month, Netflix is available at a trial rate of $9.95. Anyone who has already taken an interest in Netflix will be given a good chance to try using the service first before subscribing. The website which offered this incentive hopes that a satisfied consumer will continue using the service. Of course, not every trial consumer will become a subscriber. Netflix knows this, too; thus the commission schedule they built.

After this consumer had paid $19.90 for a 2-month subscription, Netflix had made $50 to $75 but will pay $40 the said consumer for every referral who also subscribed. Then the said website added a new Iphone with $400 retail price as another incentive to giveaway. A consumer/subscriber can take the Iphone for free or buy it at a discounted price, buy referring 10 people who will try the service.

Even though the website owner is constantly “giving” away gifts, he is still making a lot of money. Here’s an example computation: if the site owner is earning $60 per referral who subscribed, then he is making a profit of $200 for each Iphone given away.

How to Have a Safer Internet Explorer

Category : Tools and Resources

Internet users all over the world could already be in billions. Even after so many years had gone by, people are still fascinated on using the Internet because it is provides both knowledge and entertainment. These days, you can find almost anything you need and want to know from the Internet: stores that offer rare merchandise, articles with useful information, news from different countries, and whereabouts of friends and relatives.

However, along with these goodies that you get from the Internet, a bunch harmful data also lurk in all corners, always waiting for the right moment to attack. These are codes, files, or scripts that are created for various purposes: steal your secret passwords, shoot you with irritating advertisement; and worse, take over and control your computer.

You can eliminate these threats through these 2 simple steps:

1. Update the version of Internet Explorer you use to version 7. Or if your browser is the Internet Explorer, get one now. It is very easy to set up. You can find a free download from the Microsoft’s website. After installation, you may need to reboot your computer.

2. The first time you run the Internet Explorer 7, a small window will appear with an option to turn on the anti-phishing filter. Click this feature’s button and click “ok”. Your browsing experience will be safer from now on.

Now that you have an updated version of Internet Explorer

With Internet Explorer 7, you’ll experience tab browsing. You don’t need to open separate windows anymore. Just add a new tab for each website you visit.

The Internet Explorer 7 is designed with an advanced technology of anti-phising and other additional security features. This browser guards your computer and automatically blocks any suspicious websites.

How does the anti-phishing feature provide security and safety to your browser? A new feature has been added to Internet Explorer 7 to enhance the shield of your browser regarding the SSL certificates. This is simply illustrated like this: if the background is green, the website you’re visiting has a valid SSL certificate; but if the background is red, the SSL certificate is illegitimate and most probably a phishing site. The moment you see a red background, leave that site at once.

Every time you surf the Internet, always check the background color of the url. By making sure that it is always colored green before you browse a website, you will be securing your machine from getting infected with Trojan.

Your Internet Explorer can remain safe with regular updates. Check the Microsoft website for the latest version of the Internet Explorer. Your computers operating system will always be safe if you’re responsible enough to provide the utmost protection that a secured Internet Explorer can provide.

5 Tips on Choosing an Internet Service Provider

Category : ISPs

If you’re still thinking on acquiring an Internet service provider, you have 2 options to choose from: DSL and cabled Internet connections, and dial-up method.

The dial-up Internet connection is just an introductory method but it got popular, based on the over-all number of subscribers who pay-by-month. When the DSL and cabled Internet connection methods rose to popularity, the dial-up started to lose its shine.

Before you make a decision on what Internet service provider you’ll get, you must consider some factors first. If you’re an experienced Internet user, you may just want something simple. But if you’re a novice to such modern technology, it pays to be extra careful. There are many service providers out there and you just might get lucky and receive an offer for a free access to the Internet.

Here are some helpful tips when choosing an Internet service provider:

1. List down your reasons why you use the Internet. If you just need a connection which you can get information from or just a way to communicate; i.e., email, talk or chat, you can safely choose the simplest type of Internet service. Now, if you haven’t experienced Internet yet but want to learn through your own service, you may need a service with more features easily controlled by mouse.

2. Make an extensive research first. If you are looking for an Internet connection with all the fancy features; i.e., bells and whistles every time something occurs on the Internet or even when an email arrives (whether through Yahoo! or Google’s Gmail). Pay more attention on the payment plans. There are providers who offer basic services complete with features at a very low monthly payment. And there are those that will charge you with sky-high bills for your Internet connection.

3. Assess the length of time you will use the Internet. You may want to stay with your old dial-up service connection if you’d be using the Internet for just a few hours every day. Dial-up users are offered by providers with a variety of choices regarding fee plans. One of these options is ideal because you’ll pay a low-priced monthly fee for a service type which allows users Internet access for only a few hours per month. Why get an unlimited and much pricey Internet connection when you will use it for several hours only a day?

4. Check this out if you want a free Internet connection. The subscribers to DSL and cabled connections, and other Internet service providers are allowed to use America Online without charge. You must remember not to use their own connection though and you do not dial access though any AOL lines. For not changing your email address, AOL will throw in a few more services at no charge. You will get free downloading of virus scanner, pop-up blocker, and spam blocker programs. As the most well-known service provider in the US, AOL can afford to offer free Internet service to users with their connection because its income is generally generated from advertising profits rather than the revenue from subscriber.
