Getting Away this Christmas with a Catered Hotel

Category : Holidays

Christmas is a great time of year, the magic and festive fun makes it such an exciting time of the year. But for some the occasion can and will become very stressful and overwhelming, this is probably due down to the preparation. If you have a big family or alternatively lots of friends coming round for Christmas dinner, than you can and will probably get yourself in a huge pickle.

Besides from running around picking everyone’s presents up, you are left cooking a huge meal to feed everyone. Christmas is meant to be about fun and relaxation, there is no need to get stressed out.

A great solution to free yourself from the stresses and strains will come in the form of visiting a catered hotel or restaurant. There are a huge amount of places that are open on Christmas day where you can go to enjoy your meal. A lot of people think that this will take the magic out of Christmas, but I can assure you that it will not.

What is better than waking up in the morning and opening your presents, getting some breakfast together and then relaxing on the sofa until dinner time. You will then quickly pop out and grab some gorgeous Christmas dinner which is ready and piping hot, before making your way back home for a round of drinks and TV programmes.

Or you could choose to get away from it all with a fabulous break in a close by hotel. Hotels have a tendency to put on very good events around Christmas time, ranging from entertainment that is not only for kids, but will also cater for the adults. You could also get a visit from Santa himself! Once the morning entertainment has passed take a trip to the canteen, which will probably be decorated to a very high standard and enjoy a full Christmas dinner, just remember to leave enough space for desert!

Do these two options not sound very proposing? If so you should always try to book early, as spaces get snapped up in an instant. Plus most probably the earlier you book the cheaper you will get in. Do not get yourself stressed out this Christmas. There are so many options to choose from. Enjoy yourself to the best you can as Christmas only comes around once a year. Make it a time to remember, not only for your self but the entire family.

Three Strange European Christmas Traditions

Category : Holidays

Every family has it’s own personal christmas traditions. Whether it’s finding somewhere to hide Granny’s ghastly, cement-like christmas cake, the ritualistic unpacking of antique, heirloom decorations or watching that special Christmas film before bed on December 24th, everyone has their own special festive ritual. Around the world Christmas is celebrated in all manner of ways, from the twee to the downright odd yet the sentiment of family and togetherness remains the same.

Although the spirit of Christmas is strikingly similar wherever it is celebrated, the traditions that surround it vary wildly. It is easy to assume that wherever Christmas is celebrated, holly, mistletoe and stockings follow. Nothing could be further from the truth. In celebration of this, happiest of holidays, I have gathered three of the most unusual festive traditions the world has to offer. Enjoy.

La Befana – Italy
La Befana is an Italian folkloric character similar to the UK’s ‘Santa Claus’ with one major difference, she’s female. Her exact origins are uncertain, some believe that her name derives from the festival of Epiphany which became ‘Befana’ in Rome. Others see her as an evolution of ‘Strenia’ – a pagan deity who presided over new years gifts.

Traditionally, Befana visits all of Italy’s children on the eve of January 6th and she fills their socks with sweets and presents if they have been good, coal if they’ve been bad. In modern Italy coal has been replaced with black sugar candy.

La Befana is usually portrayed as an old woman wearing a black shawl, covered in soot (she enters homes through the chimney) and carrying or riding a broomstick. She also carries a hamper or sack full of presents and sweets and is usually depicted smiling.

Christian legend says that La Befana was approached by the ‘three wise men’ just a few days before Christ’s birth. They asked her for directions to his now famous manger but she did not know, instead she provided the wise men with shelter for the night.

Impressed with La Befana’s hospitality the wise men invited her on their journey to find the infant Christ but she declined, saying she had too much housework to do. After a while La Befana grew curious and had a change of heart. The old woman set out to find the wise men and Christ.

She never found them and to this day she wanders, searching for Christ, she leaves her gifts and sweeps floors wherever she goes.

Mari Lwyd – Wales
The Mari Lwyd is a Welsh new years celebration which has been speculated to derive from an ancient ritual for the Celtic god, Rhiannon.

The Mari Lwyd ceremony consists of a horse’s skull affixed to the end of a wooden pole; sheets are attached to the base of the skull thus concealing the pole and the person carrying the Mari Lwyd.

The eyes of the skull are filled with brightly-coloured objects, often bottle caps and coloured ribbons are fixed to the skull. The jaw of the skull is often sprung or hinged so the Mari Lwyd’s operator can snap it’s jaws at passers by.

If you are ‘given the bite’ (snapped at) by the Mari Lwyd you are expected to pay a cash fine.

In recent years the Mari Lwyd has come to represent the resurgence of interest in Welsh folk culture. Councils are now helping to organise bigger and better Mari Lwyds and the ceremony surround the ancient tradition is once again gaining popularity.

Krampuslauf – Austria, Bavaria and Switzerland
Krampuslauf is the night scary, devil-lke creatures called ‘Krampus’ carry cow bells, clanking chains and rods through the streets of alpine regions scaring children and adults.

Traditionally, young men dress as the Krampus and are accompanied by ‘Nikolaus’, (the local equivalent of Santa). The Krampuslauf typically occurs in the first two weeks of December, December 5 being the favoured date.

In rural areas the Krampuslauf traditions sometimes include giving those unfortunate enough to be caught by the Krampus a light birching. The Krampus monsters are often linked to legends of succubus and incubus, the nocturnal, sexually predatory demons.

The modern costume typically used on Krampuslauf consists of red wooden masks, black sheep’s skin and horns. The masks are typically hand-carved and many people enjoy Krampuslauf competitions, competing for titles such as ‘best costume’ and ‘most scary’.

The word Krampus has its origins in the old German word ‘Krampen’ which means, ‘Claw’. Many believe Krampuslauf to be a pre-christian festival, drawing on pagan influences which have survived due to the isolated nature of the Alpine region.

How Will the Economy Affect Your Spending This Holiday Season?

Category : Holidays

With the current state of the economy and the Trillions of retirement dollars lost will you change your spending habits this year?

I for one do love the Christmas holiday season, not for religious reasons or the presents I love it because of the time spent with family. My favorite part about the holidays is the food and drink, a nice bottle or two of wine and a massive Turkey dinner is what puts a smile on my face.

For most of us it’s about the kids and the part that always amazes me is how spoiled some children are. We have a 1 year old and many family members are asking me what should we buy her. My response is usually clothes and the response is usually that they want to buy her toys. First off our daughter has so many toys that have been generously passed down to her from friends and family that she doesn’t need any. The second part is like most children her favorite toys are the remotes that run our tv, pots and pans, her parents cell phones and of course any box that a gift comes in.

In the area of saving money for this holiday season and for more to come don’t waste money buying toys for any child under two. Get them some clothes, they grow so darn fast and the great part is the clothes for the most part are very cheap.

I can remember as a child our parents for many years were quite unhappy and in their moment of guilt insisted on buying us a huge amount of presents each year. I can honestly say that even at the tender age of 7 thinking to myself “wow there are a lot of presents, this is going to take while to get through!”

I think many of us have lost the real meaning of the holiday season and that’s being thankful for all we have, being with family and enjoying a good meal. The other aspect is that it’s a holiday, what bothers me are the droves of people that wake up early on boxing day to save a couple of bucks on a new TV. What we do on boxing day is spend time together, go for a walk and if we’re really lucky we take the time to skiing and snowboarding.

So this year while the stock markets have played havoc with our retirement funds, how about spending less money on gifts not because of the stock market but because we already spend way to much at Christmas time.

Focus on family, focus on the food and drink and not on the gifts as the real gift is our family!

How to Have a Frugal Thanksgiving Holiday

Category : Holidays

If you’re preparing the Thanksgiving meal for friends or family you’ll be happy to know that there are things you can do to save money. By following these tips, you can have a wonderful holiday meal without spending a lot.

1. Look for a free turkey.
Many grocery stores offer a free turkey with a certain amount of groceries purchased. You can also find rebates on turkeys from specific brands. Local agencies and the United Way also have free turkey programs available. Ask around and you’ll be surprised with what kind of deals you can find.

2. Suggest a potluck dinner.
If you provide the turkey for the meal and everyone brings a side dish, it definitely lowers your costs. The practice is becoming more and more common, especially with families. Assign each person a portion of the meal. Not only will you save money, but everyone at the party will feel involved in the meal.

3. Have your guests RSVP.
Although leftovers are a hallmark of every Thanksgiving dinner, you don’t want to spend too much at the grocery store buying for guests who won’t be there. Confirm your guests a few weeks ahead of time so you know exactly how much food you need to prepare.

4. Shop smart.
Start shopping for canned foods, such as yams and vegetables, early. You can make a lot of different side dishes from inexpensive canned foods. They often go on sale in the weeks prior to Thanksgiving. Stock up so you can make Thanksgiving dinner as well as a few other inexpensive meals in the holiday season.
You can also shop smart by clipping coupons for your holiday shopping. A lot of stores offer double or triple coupons on specific days. Call the grocery stores in your area to see where you can get the best deal. With coupons, you can significantly cut the costs of your holiday meal. Printable grocery coupons are becoming more prevalent online as well, and that can save you time with locating and clipping coupons because you only print the coupons you plan to use.

5. Keep your meal simple.
If you’re trying to host a frugal holiday dinner, this isn’t the year to try truffle whipped potatoes or gold leaf chocolate cake. Even if you’re not planning anything so extravagant, make sure to use familiar ingredients and cook from scratch as much as you can. A store bought pumpkin pie can cost three times as much as one made at home. Cook what you can and use the expensive substitutes only if you are crunched for time.

6. Decorate on the cheap.
If you need some decorations to make your table more festive, don’t step foot inside a department store! Head to your local Dollar Tree or other similar discount store and you’ll be impressed with what you’ll find. You can pick up inexpensive toys to entertain the kids, holiday dish towels and even serving plates. Take a look at the selection of nuts and party mix there as well to round out your holiday meal.

Jamie Jefferson writes for Momscape.com and Susies-Coupons.com, where you’ll find free printable grocery coupons, as well as wine coupons.

We’ll Give Thanks At Thanksgiving For What God Has Kept Us From!

Category : Holidays

For my family, Thanksgiving has always been the day that friends and relatives get together to thank God for His blessings on us for the last year. We’ll have the kids and grandkids over, the house will be noisy and the aroma coming from the turkey and dressing in the kitchen will be maddening. Before we eat, we’ll all gather at the table and give thanks not only for what He has given us, but what He has kept us from!

He kept me from having the big one take me to that big fishing hole in the sky. Three stays in the hospital with a bum ticker is not a lot of fun, but for excitement value, it can’t be beat. After a while though, it gets boring and you just wish someone could fix the problem. I’m certainly not complaining! A week in the hospital with beautiful nurses coming in and out of my room day and night is not a terribly bad way to spend a few days. I guess God’s not finished with me yet.

He’s kept my favorite fishing sites from being rearranged by one of the numerous hurricanes roaring inland from the gulf this year. Apalachicola and St. George Island, Florida are two of my favorite places on earth and they were spared the horrific devastation that occurred in the wake of Hurricane Ike at Galveston, Texas. God and I are fishing buddies from way back. I guess He didn’t want anything to mess up our fishing trips together.

In His infinite wisdom, He’s kept me from worrying about my 401 K being wiped out due to the roller coaster ride of the stock market. Based on the theory that you have to have money in an investment account in order to make or lose money, I’ve been spared the anxiety of thousands who have watched their retirement packages die a slow death in today’s financial markets.

I’ve kept my money in an old sock hidden under a big rock near a tree in the back yard. Biblically that’s not the way stewardship over what God has entrusted to us is supposed to work, but with our nation’s economic turndown, it certainly seems to be a pretty wise move.

He’s kept us from losing any children to death. I can’t begin to understand the heartbreak of losing a child, which my brother did this past year. A car wreck took the life of his oldest son. We thank God for saving us from that terrible experience.

He’s kept me from having to mow the yard more than once this year. In the third year of a major drought, the grass on our lawn barely makes it through spring time before it begins to die from lack of water. Despite continuous soaking, the grass never seems to get enough to drink. If you look hard enough, you’ll always find something positive in every bad situation.

He’s kept me from enduring another mediocre college football season by the Alabama Crimson Tide! After 10 games in which Alabama has won all of them, they have already won the SEC’s western division and will be going to the SEC Championship game against The University of Florida! I know that President Elect Barack Obama has been called the messiah, but all of us Bama fans believe that title should go to Nick Saban!

Finally, I will gratefully thank Him for all of the serious things that he is keeping me and my family from having to endure that we know absolutely nothing about. Sometimes after danger has passed, I see evidence of how, except for God’s intervention, a situation occurred that could have been disastrous for me and mine.

I can’t see ahead, but as long as I have faith that He’s keeping bad things away from me, I couldn’t care less what the future brings.

Simple and Easy Halloween Tricks and Tips for Decorating

Category : Holidays

So Halloween is just a few days away and you want to make it extra special for your kids or maybe you just want to get in on the fun and do something different this year.

With only a few days away, there is not much time to really make anything extravagant and if your budget cannot afford costly props, then these simple little tricks and tips will help to make your Halloween a really frightening and festive eye catcher.

First thing first, and by all means leave all the leaves that have fallen from the trees all over the yard. This is about the only decorative celebration that you actually want your yard to look messy! A good thing, since we don’t have much time and it’s only a few days away!

Go to your local grocery store or farmer’s market and pick up as many pumpkins as you can carry. They generally get cheaper the closer you get to Halloween, especially the day of which is Ok because you won’t need a lot of time to dress them up.

That also goes for Halloween Treats, stores always over stock and they are dirt-cheap on the day of Halloween. This is true during the day once they first mark them down. Don’t wait until early evening, after work to expect to find any because they will be gone. So if you can manage, go on the day of Halloween.

Once you have your pumpkins, find all the colored markers you can find and spruce up the pumpkins with any kind of image you like and don’t limit yourself to faces! You can draw a bat, a cat, a ghost, happy faces; scary faces; the choices are endless. Let go, be creative and have some fun.

The next thing to do is to smear your front door, porch, bushes, and trees with cotton balls pulled apart to look like cobwebs. You can actually buy “cobwebs” in a bag, also made out of cotton, but really it’s just cotton and the cotton balls you have in your bathroom works just as well and more importantly you probably have them ready at hand.

Next put on some spooky music, you can download some really cool stuff for free, and don’t be shy about turning up the volume. Remember to hit “replay” all night long. Last year, I downloaded the theme from “The Addams Family”, you remember how it goes.

“They’re creepy and they’re kooky,
Mysterious and spooky,
They’re all together ooky,
The Addams Family”

Not necessarily scary, but the kids LOVED the snapping of the fingers and just giggled as they came near the house. It was really fun watching them.

While you were buying your pumpkins, don’t forget to buy a bale or two of hay. This is another cheap prop that’s easy and quick to use. Use one bale of hay and stew it all over your porch and front door. Use the second bale of hay to prop up your pumpkins. The messier the better.

Finally, don’t forget your costume attire. We ALL have black, so wear black from head to toe and if you have a big, floppy hat and can cackle like a witch, all the better!

There you have it, a few simple props and no more than an hour of preparation and you’re done.

Happy Halloween!

Chocolate Bunnies and Colored Eggs

Category : Holidays

Easter is a time of joy and happiness, and most of us get together with family and friends to celebrate and rejoice, search for dyed eggs, cook traditional Easter dinners, and have fun in the presence of loved ones.

Easter falls on the first Sunday after the first full moon after the Spring Equinox.

Origins of Easter

The holiday known as Easter is when Christians celebrate the rising of Jesus Christ from the grave. It celebrates the story of how Jesus Christ took on the sins of the world, and gave his life for those that are willing to accept the gift of eternal life. Although it is the story of how Jesus died on the cross, the Easter story isn’t just about his death.

It is about how Jesus promised that he would rise again on the third day to show the world that he paid the price for their sins, and ascend to heaven. His purpose was to die and rise again, thereby absolving believers of their sins.

Many people are unaware of the fact that Easter is a combination of both Christian and pagan beliefs. Tradition has it, that Eostre, the goddess of Spring was accompanied by a hare. During Springtime, many animals give birth, and rabbits are the most fertile animals known.

Since spring is a celebration of rebirth and new life, pagan families used to tell their children that a magic hare would come deliver gifts to them on this special day. The “magic hare” would deliver secret gifts symbolic of new life, like hand painted eggs.

In Germany children would put nests of grass in their yard, believing that the Easter bunny would drop off colorful eggs and candy in their “baskets.” The origin of the Easter bunny in America began as German settlers moved here and brought their traditions with them.

Whether you’re Christian or not, Easter is when family gets together. That’s what it should be about. For most people, Easter is a time for children to hunt for brightly colored eggs and baskets full of candy, for going to church in elaborate Easter bonnets, and for eating a traditional meal.

What to Do on Easter?

The Easter Parade is an annual event held in the New York City, which ends in front of the St. Patrick’s Cathedral, where most people attending the Easter Parade will attend the services held that day.

At the parade, you will be able to admire different types of costumes and the beautiful Easter Bonnets, which is in fact the attraction of that day. You can also enjoy different types of Easter dishes made especially for the parade festivities.

For over a hundred years, children have gathered on the South Lawn of the White House on the Monday after Easter to roll Easter eggs across the yard and meet the Easter Bunny. Local artists created the decorated eggs for the Easter 2006 egg roll, which represented each state and the District of Columbia.

The Easter 2006 egg collection continues the tradition that began in 1994, where each state sends a decorated egg to the White House for display. The collection is coordinated by the American Egg Board, and each egg is truly astounding in its decoration!

Colored Eggs and Easter Egg Hunts

One of the most well known pastimes of Easter is the painting of Easter eggs. To color eggs you can hard boil them, or blow out the eggs using a needle to poke a small hole in the narrow end of the egg, and then add a slightly larger hole in the other end.

Then, holding the egg over a bowl, blow through the small hole, and the egg will be forced out the larger hole and into the bowl. Just rinse with cold water and dye. In bowls, combine food coloring and water with a teaspoon of vinegar, or buy an Easter egg decorating kit that comes complete with everything you need to decorate Easter eggs.

When it comes to Easter for kids, no Easter is complete without an Easter egg hunt. You can hide the eggs in the house or in the yard and let the kids to go look for them. You want to hide the eggs where the kids can find them, but you don’t want to make it too easy.

Another alternative for the Easter egg hunt is to use plastic eggs. You can fill the eggs with candy, money, trinkets, toys, or whatever else you choose. The beauty of having the plastic eggs is that the kids never know what they’re going to find in their eggs on their Easter egg hunt.

If you have a house full of adult guests, try this variation: Use the same little plastic eggs scattered all over the yard, only each of the eggs will contain a small piece of paper with a number. The numbers match numbered presents waiting nearby.

Easter, just like any other festivity, is a time of joy and celebrations where sharing and giving is on the top of the list. Getting together on Easter, celebrating, laughing, and having fun makes for a very happy Easter.

The Thanksgiving Turkey Tradition In America

Category : Holidays

While it is doubtful that the attendees of the first Thanksgiving actually had turkey on the menu, the Turkey was nevertheless an important part of the diets of many Native Americans. In the sixteenth century, turkeys were imported to Europe via Turkey the country, and the name stuck.

Most historians agree that the Wampanoag Indians introduced the Turkey to the Pilgrim settlers, in addition to squash, corn, and other foods. Thanksgiving did not become an official holiday in the United States until 1863, and by 1916, the prevalence of the turkey at the Thanksgiving table was so great that people had begun to refer to the holiday as turkey day. In 1941 an attempt was actually made by President Roosevelt to move the date of Thanksgiving forward in order to encourage a longer Christmas shopping season, but this was voted down by Congress.

As the popularity of the Thanksgiving turkey increased, wild turkeys were in danger of becoming an endangered species until 1991, when the government declared them a protected species and imposed stricter laws and conditions on the number of turkeys that could be hunted and killed each year. This does not include domesticated turkeys raised on farms, however.

Turkey consumption is highest during the holiday season, which means that winter is the top season for turkey farmers. In 1935, turkey consumption per capita was 1.7 pounds, but today, thanks to marketing efforts, consumption of turkey per capita is approximately 20 pounds. Turkey is popular with people on low fat diets, since it is naturally low in fat and rich in nutrients, and lends itself to many low fat basting and cooking recipes A five ounce serving of skinless turkey contains almost half of the recommended daily allowance of folic acid, and contains many other vitamins as well as zinc and potassium.

Turkeys are bred specifically for their breast white meat, so much so that many turkeys are fertilized via artificial insemination because they are too large to mate. Turkeys can grow as large as 70 pounds, but most are usually around twenty pounds. Most turkeys come pre injected with butter or vegetable oil and are sold as self basting turkeys, and are available year round, although of course, most prevalently during Thanksgiving and Christmas. If you are unsure as to how to cook your turkey, many companies, including Butterball offer their customers the option of calling the turkey hotline to obtain recipe ideas, and troubleshooting tips. The turkey is truly a significant part of the American Thanksgiving experience.

Best Selling Christmas Toys For 2008

Category : Holidays

It’s amazing to see and, maybe rather comforting also, that some of the best selling Christmas toys this year will be ones from the past with a new twist, and updated versions of the original product. Baby dolls, for example, resembling more and more the real thing, are expected to be in high demand. These babies are coming home with their new electronic potties and their instructions for potty training. Toys and games connected to children’s entertainment are also expected to be high on their Christmas list. The best selling Christmas toys are ones that allow them to portray their favorite characters dancing, singing, and playing out their favorite big screen moments.

So, while you have your little girls dreaming of being rock stars, what is your little boy hoping for? You will not be surprised to know it’s the big screen action heroes. However, there does not seem to be a trend towards war, but rather the heroes being portrayed in good old fashion adventures. Even your children are sensing a need to return to more traditional and simpler times. They are finding it less complicated and more fun. The best selling Christmas toys this year are going to provide that.

Also, expect to see a new game craze coming out of Japan. The electronic action game has some new features that are expected to take the younger children by surprise, and take their attention from the usual box games that have been so popular in recent years. Again, based on adventure and heroism, these games can become interactive, with a special tracking device to find the invisible beast. The beast is captured by rotating your body until you hook a beast, and reel it in by winding the handle. Then the battle begins. This is at the top of the best selling Christmas toys as parents are looking for the best deals that they can afford this year.

Another electronic action game that appears to be a watch is also gaining the attention of the savvy shoppers. Based on a television show, dial into the alien and its powers you wish to emulate, and save the world! The sound effects and lighting tricks are the same as on the television. The action is fast and furious, and completely engaging.

There is also a shooting game. While easy to learn, it may very well take a lifetime to become an expert. Become a Bakugan warrior, rolling your Bakugan onto a special gate card and be transformed in a mean machine. The special effects surrounding this game are pretty awesome in the eyes of the child. This may also get the attention of his/hers older siblings. Everything you need to enjoy this game is included in the initial purchase, so there is no worry about having to add to this game.

Whether it’s a baby doll with 8 different life functions that will keep your little mother caring for baby for hours, or new hand held electronics, best selling Christmas toys are here.

Non Traditional Thanksgiving Meal Ideas

Category : Holidays

We all know what a traditional Thanksgiving dinner looks like, turkey or ham, mashed potatoes, stuffing, gravy, cornbread, cranberry sauce, and pumpkin and pecan pie. But what if, for whatever reason, this type of menu does not fit into your diet. It is still possible to have a delicious thanksgiving meal while paying attention to fat and sodium content, and or abstaining from eating meat.

Many people struggle with their weight, especially during the holiday season, when the average amount of calories consumed by the average person on Thanksgiving is a whopping 4,500. There are many ways to reduce this number, however. You can remove the skin from the turkey before eating, make gravy from defatted drippings, replace the butter and heavy cream in mashed potatoes with fat free broth, fat free half and half, low fat milk or low fat butter milk, and you can also make your pies using a low fat phyllo dough as the base. These are just some of the many ways to reduce your calorie and fat content, and the Internet is full of low fat and non fat holiday recipes as well.

For those on low sodium diets, prepackaged menu items can pose a challenge. Conventional turkeys usually contain an added salt solution, so be sure to check the package before purchasing. Making your own mashed potatoes will also allow you to control sodium content, since you can either add a small amount, or simply leave it out all together and place a salt shaker on the table for your guests to use. You can also use sodium free or low sodium chicken broth in place of the heavy cream in your potatoes, which will make them lower in fat as well.

Vegetarians now have many options that were not available a few years ago. Some companies sell pre packaged tofu turkey meals that come with the tofu turkey, gravy, and even a meatless wishbone. Alternatively, you can always use vegetarian hamburger substitute to make mock meatloaf, and at the same time, shift the focus of the meal from the main dishes to the side dishes, and include an assortment of healthy and flavorful vegetable casseroles, salads, and even pastas.

Your Thanksgiving meal does not have to be traditional at all. Many families believe that the best part of the holiday is the creation of their own traditions, which is why some opt to skip the kitchen altogether and dine out. If you are set on preparing your meal, though, the good news is that with a little creativity, you can craft one that is delicious and unique, regardless of your dietary restrictions or preferences.

Six Basics For Buying Anniversary Gifts For Mothers

Category : Holidays

Buying Anniversary gifts for moms has its fair share of problems for the inexperienced buyer. The mother’s anniversary gift needs to send the right signal and there is no way you can learn this through a book or by reading an article. This can only come through experience and a fine attention to detail.

This article will provide you with some basic information that will help you make the right choices when shopping. The below six points will help you and your gift send the right message to the special mother in your life. With these basics you will not have to worry about spending money on the wrong gift again.

Basic tip 1: Anniversary gifts for moms need to have lots of sentimental value. A perfect anniversary present for her would make her feel great about herself, her family and her time spent with her family.

Basic tip 2: Keep an eye out for what she would like to have – a piece of jewelry, a trip to a foreign land or simply a night out at a special place. As with any other kind of mother’s gift, it must be something that she can emotionally relate to and cherish.

Basic tip 3: A mother’s jewelry is a very sentimental asset for her. But not every kind of jewelry will do the trick – the jewelry should somehow relate to her family, for example a locket with a family picture inside.

Basic tip 4: A special gift for mom – any mom, will always need to be unique to her and her family in someway. It’s not a bad idea to have something tailor-made for her, like a piece of jewelry.

Basic tip 5: Sometimes a good mother’s gift is not “something” but rather some action or attitude. Maybe the gift of time is all she wants or maybe she would just cherish it you could make a donation in her (or her family’s) name.

Basic tip 6: The mother’s anniversary gift needs to be presented on time – 12 midnight usually is the best time but if that is unsuitable then first ting next morning will do the trick as well. It’s important to send the message that you have given the gift lots of thought and the act of showing up at midnight (or early morning) shows you were looking forward to the moment.

Gifts for moms require a lot of prior thought and planning to get everything right. The ideal gift should either bring back memories or create new ones by being unique and personal. Keep in mind that the goal of this present is to capture the memories of previous years while inspiring hope for the years to come.

Whose Family Do We Visit, His or Hers?

Category : Holidays

Every year, millions of North American families go through the agony of deciding who to spend Christmas Day with; his family or her family. Add children, divorce and remarriage into the mix and the logistics become even more of a nightmare.

Before my husband and I had children, it was rather easy. Like a lot of us, we alternated. One Christmas Day with his family, the following Christmas Day with my family. However, when we had our first child, things became a bit more problematic. To add to the predicament, my mother moved hundreds of miles away to an out of the way little town up north.

We decided to turn what some saw as a drawback into an adventure. Instead of driving five hours in potentially dangerous winter conditions, we opted to take the train. Our two and a half year old son was bursting with excitement about taking the train to visit his grandmother and surrounded himself with picture books of trains thinking that he could decide which one we would take. He settled on an old fashioned steam engine.

The trip ended up being well worth the time and effort. The scenery was spectacular, the company was terrific and we had a great time.

The next few years we spent Christmas Day with my husband’s family without issue.

Until the Christmas from hell.

Our children were now four and seven, and we had relocated about two hours away from my husband’s family due to work related matters.

The morning started out well enough. The kids were up at 5 to open their stockings, a tradition we started that allowed my husband and I a few more hours of shut eye, though of course we overheard every tip toe and every whispery giggle.

We had our traditional Christmas breakfast followed by presents, followed by…WHINING! AND MORE WHINING. I detest whining, but in all honesty, I couldn’t blame the kids for being cranky. It was Christmas and all they wanted to do was stay home with their new treasures. Instead, they had to get all dolled up to visit the family.

We went, reluctant kids in tow, to spend the afternoon at my sister-in-laws house. Once we got there, the kids perked up (more presents will do that), and we had a good time.

The drive home was another story. A two hour drive turned into a five hour white knuckle adventure courtesy of a major winter storm that dumped twelve inches of snow over the entire area in less than twelve hours. As we crawled homeward in whiteout conditions, grateful for the rear lights of the truck in front of us we decided right then and there, never again!

No more traveling on Christmas Day. It was time to start our own traditions! And we have. We always have the same breakfast, followed by finger foods throughout the day, and a full course dinner late in the evening. We watch movies, play board and video games and just have fun spending uninterrupted time together as a family.

If I had to choose one word to describe our Christmas Day it would be “relaxed”. No one needs to be in a hurry because we’re not going anywhere.

Tips For The Best Halloween Party

Category : Holidays

Halloween parties can be fun, but they do require some advanced planning. The first thing that you should decide, after the guest list, is how much money you are willing and able to spend and how much time and effort you are willing and able to put into your party. You should send out your invitations one to two weeks before the party and should clearly state the time, place, themes, and whether or not costumes are required or optional. Of course, some people will never wear a costume, no matter what you say, but it is worth a try if that is what you want for your party.

You might want to pick a costume theme. Maybe everyone should come dressed as zombies, or any character from their favorite teenage slasher flick or B horror movie. You could even have a Celtic theme if you want. And in terms of everyone wearing a costume, you could always mention in your invitation that anyone who shows up without a costume will be forced to walk around wearing only their dunce cap and their underwear.

When it comes to decorating, you can either keep things simple with spooky black lights, hanging Halloween decorations and a few fake spider webs, or you can go all out and create your own haunted house. You can also replace all of your normal light bulbs with colored ones, and cover all tables with either black shower curtains or Halloween light tablecloths and put some fake spiders, party confetti, and plastic cockroaches in the center. Fake rats are always fun, too, especially when you put them in the refrigerator in your medicine cabinets, which by the way, all of your party guests will look in at some point, people just cant help being nosy.

Create a play list of music that incorporates both the theme of your party and a mix of regular music to appeal to the tastes of all of your guests. If your party has a theme, you should try to find music that complements your theme. Make sure to have a costume contest with lots of fun prizes too, with winners for both genders, and do not forget the nicest underwear awards for anyone who is stubborn enough to show up without a costume, despite your warnings. Follow these tips, and you will be on your way to the best Halloween party ever. Remember, it is not all about how much money you spend but how much effort and creativity you put into it that makes a party a success.
