There is nothing more exciting than getting ready for a first date. I love the feeling. The excitement and the tension are all too real. What are they like, will we get along, will he like the way I look, and will I like the way he looks? So many questions, so many variables!
But I do think it is so important to look your best. First impressions do count and I think it’s only fair and respectful that you take the time to look your best for the person you are about to meet. I’m not talking about ballroom fancy; just smart, clean and well dressed.
Even jeans and a jean jacket can look great if you take the time to shower and groom yourself. It’s all about presentation and caring about what you look. I’ve heard some people complain and say that they don’t normally look like that so why should they bother to do it on a first date.
It’s more the symbolism of the gesture than anything else. You’re stating to yourself and to this person that you are putting your best foot forward and hope and expect that they do the same. It’s not about expecting to look like this all the time. It simply states that you care enough about yourself to look your best for them.
And putting your best foot forward when it comes to relationships is so important. I think all too often people have become so flippant or too cynical when it comes to starting over again, so it’s so important to remember that everything counts, especially on the first date.
I can’t think of a better way of saying thank you for meeting with me when they arrive well dressed and presented. Call it an old fashioned thing, but the reality is, with the popularity of internet dating, and the dozens of potentials out there, you have to give yourself a fighting chance.
Showing up disheveled certainly puts you at the bottom of the food chain so to speak. So get out there and put on your best suit or your best dress and look great, even if it is for a few short hours.
Regardless of whether the date took off or not, at least you know, you did all you could do in order to make it work. Sometimes it’s a personality clash; sometimes it’s just the wrong fit. But you never know, sometimes its just right and you will be ever so glad that you took the time to look your best for them.
Beyond anything else, dressing up and looking your best does boost your confidence. It doesn’t matter how well seasoned of an internet dater you are, we always get just a little bit nervous meeting someone for the first time, especially when it comes to romance.
